CBS News '48 Hours' features Dr. Anthony Garcia's quadruple murder case

Yesterday, CBS's "48 Hours: Resident Evil" featured the story of the two double murders in Omaha, Nebraska committed out of revenge by Dr. Anthony Garcia, which has infamously come to be known nationwide as the "Creighton killings."

Garcia was convicted last October of the two sets of double murders, involving ties back to his old medical residency program at Creighton University, and now awaits a hearing by a three-judge panel to determine if he will face the death penalty for his crimes.

Garcia was fired from Crieghton University's pathology residency training program back in 2001 after raising the ire of his supervisors, pathology department chairman Roger Brumback and residency director William Hunter, and has since had trouble finding employment as a doctor.

He blamed  Brumback (one of the murder victims), and Hunter (whose son was one of Garcia's victims) for destroying his career.

That death penalty hearing, which was to have taken place in March, had been postponed at the last minute after Judge Gary Randall begrudgingly agreed with a last-minute emergency motion filed by the defense, arguing they needed more time to explore Dr. Garcia's history of mental problems as a mitigating factor against being sentence to the death penalty.

Judge Randall then appointed the Nebraska Commission on Public Advocacy, a statewide group of public defenders with more resources than his current defense, to help represent Dr. Garcia in the sentencing phase of the trial and, more importantly, in any subsequent appeals.

Police apprehended Garcia by pinging his cell phone with a cell phone tower simulator

Garcia was apparently done in during his criminal trial from his various cell phone records and credit card purchases that placed him in the time and general vicinity of the Brumback murders.

He also allegedly vaguely confessed to a stripper in Terra Haute, Indiana, to once killing a boy and an old lady, which seems to match the description of the Dundee murders.

Police and FBI apparently located and apprehended Garcia, again through his cell phone, while he was traveling on the road.

It is believed they located him in his travels by pinging his cell phone using a highly controversial device known as a Stingray (equipped inside a car or van) or a Dirtbox (equipped inside an aircraft), which acts like a cell phone tower simulator picking up information from any cell phone in the range of the device.

No doubt, this already protracted murder case will take years more time in the courts with appeals before any resolution or justice can be found for the victims' families.
